Our Times is a news magazine program produced by the Video Magazine Storytelling class in the Journalism Department of Boston University. In Episode One of Season Three, Alexandra Cedrowski relays the story of three student-athletes who met through track and field; Daniela Cejudo Curiel visits a local Columbian restaurant and finds the American Dream being redefined; Paris Hugley reports on a pop-up beauty supply store for the Black students of Boston; Jules Germek finds out what all the clacking is about with the Boston Typewriter Orchestra; and Gia Chaudry examines the knotty complexity of a Jewish activist advocating for Palestine.

Reading Between the (Track) Lanes

Alexandra Cedrowski is a junior at Boston University, majoring in Journalism and Business Administration and Management. Her passion lies in telling impactful stories that challenge societal norms and celebrate individual differences. Cedrowski’s story delves into the lives of three student-athletes who met through track and field, forging a bond that grew beyond the sport. Now roommates, they challenge preconceived notions about their sport while celebrating their unique personalities and experiences.

Paris Hugley

Our Hair: Curls, Coils and Community

With a passion for long-form features, Our Times reporter Paris Hugley uses her dedication to uncovering compelling stories in underrepresented communities to bring attention to overlooked issues. Hugley discovered her story in Nuly Root’d, a start-up at Northeastern University founded by two students who created a pop-up beauty supply store to address the lack of access to hair products for Black students in Boston.

Gia Chaudry

Outside Trader Joe’s

Gia Chaudry is a Journalism graduate student at Boston University with a passion for exploring activism, in-depth stories about women’s experiences, and the cultural forces that shape them. With a background in writing, video production, and storytelling, she reveals the life and legacy of a Jewish mother advocating for Palestine in the heart of a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, shedding light on her impact and the broader themes of activism and social change.

Daniela Cejudo Curiel 

Flavor, Community, and the American Dream

With a focus on documentary style and print reporting, Daniela Cejudo has carried over her Latino roots to her stories. This has carried her to a Colombian restaurant in Hyde Park, which led to a story of redefining the American dream and what it means to build a family away from home. The reporter finds a heartwarming tale of community and culture, taking in a slice of Colombia on the East Coast.

Jules Germek

The Boston Typewriter Orchestra

Jules Germek is a senior majoring in Journalism and minoring in Public Policy Analysis. She tells the story of the Boston Typewriter Orchestra, a unique collective that uses vintage typewriters as musical instruments. Jules interviewed the group members and went to their concert, where she explored the process behind the typewriter-based music.
